Best Denver Area Hikes to Avoid I-70

  • Post category:Blog

Just can’t handle an hour or three watching the brake lights on a semi before you even get to a hiking trail? Getting the family out the door take an extra 30 minutes and now I-70 is backed up? Or, do you simply have other things to do but still want to get the family outside?

The Best Denver Area Hikes

These are, in my opinion, the best options for a fun hike that won’t require too much driving or commitment. Capturing the diversity of hiking experiences near Denver these three will become repeats for days that you want to get out but may have less time to do so.

1. Raccoon Trail

As the namesake of this site may suggest, we love Raccoon Trial.   Located on the back side of Golden Gate Canyon State Park, the trailhead features stunning views of the continental divide.  This is the closest to Denver that you can find views like this. There are restrooms at the trailhead and picnic areas. The elevation gain may be strenuous for some but is generally a beginner friendly trail.

2. Castlewood Canyon State Park

Surprisingly, this gem is in the opposite direction from the mountains.  Southeast of Denver, past Parker, is Castlewood Canyon State Park.  This Canyon was formed by Cherry Creek and features winding trails through the Canyon bottom.  With walls rising up to 300 feet above the creek bed, it’s a stunning and unique hiking experience not far from the city and far from interstate traffic. There are tons of rocks to climb, winding trails, and (if you time it correctly) a cool creek to play in.

3. Mount Falcon Hiking Trail

Mount Falcon is back on the mountainous side of Denver near Morrison. The most famous feature are the ruins of the Walker’s castle, the cornerstone of a would-be summer White House for U.S. Presidents, and a wooden tower with amazing views.  Be sure to choose where you park and what you want to see as this can range from a brief walk to a moderately challenging hike over many hours.

Get The Family Outside

Don’t wait for a full day or skip a day because of traffic.  If you’re in Denver, these three trails will get you outside without fighting the I-70 traffic or committing a full day, unless you’re just having that much fun.
